What Organs Does an Abdominal & Pelvic CT Scan Examine?

An abdominal and pelvic CT is one of the most comprehensive imaging investigations available — giving your doctor a detailed cross-sectional view of nearly all the major organs in the lower half of the body in a single, efficient appointment.

Structures examined include:

  • Liver, gallbladder, spleen, and pancreas
  • Kidneys and adrenal glands
  • Stomach and intestines (small and large bowel)
  • Bladder and pelvic organs (uterus and ovaries in women; prostate in men)
  • Major blood vessels, lymph nodes, and abdominal wall

This breadth of coverage makes it an extremely efficient diagnostic investigation — providing your GP or specialist with a complete picture to guide the right management plan. At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, all abdominal and pelvic CT scans are reported by specialist radiologists with results sent directly to your referring doctor.

Symptoms & Conditions That Lead to an Abdominal CT

Abdominal and pelvic CT is one of the most commonly requested investigations in general practice, and there are many clinical reasons your GP may refer you for one.

Common reasons for referral include:

  • Unexplained abdominal pain, bloating, or swelling
  • Changes in bowel habits or unexplained weight loss
  • Abnormal blood results such as elevated liver enzymes or kidney markers
  • Blood in the urine or stool
  • A palpable lump or mass felt during examination
  • Investigation of kidney stones, gallstones, or bowel conditions
  • Monitoring or follow-up of a known condition

Whatever the reason for your referral, the detailed CT images provide your doctor with clear, reliable information to guide the most appropriate care. Epoch Medical Imaging is located at St Ives Shopping Village, serving patients from St Ives, Gordon, Wahroonga, Killara, and across the North Shore.

Contrast Fluid & Injection: What to Expect

abdominal and pelvic CT scans are performed with a contrast agent to improve the visibility of organs and blood vessels.

What to expect:

  • Oral contrast: A liquid you drink before the scan to highlight the bowel — you may need to arrive 30–60 minutes early.
  • IV contrast (injection): Given through a small cannula in the arm during the scan to highlight blood vessels and organs. You may feel a brief, harmless warm flush, metallic taste and/or sensation of going to the bathroom — this passes within a minute or two.
  • Fasting: Usually 4 hours if IV contrast is required. Water is always permitted and we recommend you remain well hydrated.
