What Is a CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) and What Does It Show?
A CT Coronary Angiogram (CTCA) is a non-invasive scan that produces detailed images of the coronary arteries — the blood vessels that supply the heart muscle with oxygen-rich blood.
A CTCA can show:
– Plaque build-up within the coronary artery walls (both soft and calcified deposits)
– Narrowing of the coronary arteries (stenosis)
– The overall structure of the heart chambers and major vessels
– Coronary artery calcium scoring as part of the same study
– Anatomical variations in coronary artery structure
This information allows your cardiologist or GP to assess the health of the coronary arteries without an invasive procedure — providing clear, actionable information to guide your ongoing heart health management at Epoch Medical Imaging located in St Ives Shopping Village.
Is a CTCA Safe? Radiation, Contrast Dye & Preparation
A CTCA is a safe and well-established investigation. Modern CT technology has significantly reduced the radiation dose, and the diagnostic benefit of a clear cardiac assessment far outweighs the minimal risk for appropriate patients.
How to Prepare:
– Fast for 4 hours before your appointment (water is permitted throughout).
– Avoid caffeine for 12 hours prior — caffeine can elevate heart rate and affect image quality.
– Your heart rate will be assessed on arrival and medication may be given to optimise it if required.
– Inform our team of any allergies, kidney conditions, or current medications when booking.
– A blood test to check kidney function may be required before IV contrast adminstration.
Our team at Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village will provide full written preparation instructions when you book on (02) 9129 6999.
