CT Scan of the Chest

Chest CT scans at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives. Detailed lung and chest imaging with specialist reporting. Serving the North Shore — Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon.

Why Would My Doctor Refer Me for a Chest CT Scan?

A chest CT gives your doctor a detailed, three-dimensional picture of everything inside your chest — the lungs, airways, heart outline, major blood vessels, ribs and surrounding soft tissue. It is the natural next step when your GP needs a clearer answer beyond what a standard chest X-ray can provide.

Common reasons for a chest CT referral include:

  • A persistent cough or unexplained breathlessness that needs further investigation
  • An abnormal finding on a previous chest X-ray
  • Chest discomfort or pain requiring detailed assessment
  • Monitoring a known lung or chest condition over time
  • Pre-operative assessment before a chest procedure
  • Recurrent chest infections

At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, our specialist radiologists provide detailed chest CT reports with rapid turnaround — giving your doctor the clarity needed to plan the most appropriate care. We serve patients from across the Upper North Shore including St Ives, Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon, Killara, and Wahroonga.

Can a Chest CT Detect Lung Cancer or Early Lung Disease?

Yes — a chest CT is highly sensitive and can detect small changes within the lung tissue that are far too subtle to appear on a standard chest X-ray. This makes it a valuable tool for investigating early lung concerns and for screening higher-risk patients.

A chest CT is used to:

  • Detect and characterise lung nodules — small areas identified within the lung tissue
  • Assess areas of inflammation, infection, or structural change
  • Monitor known lung conditions such as emphysema, fibrosis, or bronchiectasis
  • Screen higher-risk patients as part of Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP)

For patients aged 50–70 with a significant smoking history, low-dose CT lung screening is now part of Australia’s national program. Ask your GP whether you may be eligible. At Epoch Medical Imaging, we provide fast, expert reporting for all chest CT studies.

How to Prepare for Your Chest CT at Epoch St Ives
