What Does a Facial & Sinus CT Scan Show?
A CT scan of the facial bones and sinuses provides exceptional detail of the fine bony structures around the nose, eyes and cheeks — anatomy that is far too intricate and overlapping to assess accurately on a standard X-ray. It is the definitive investigation for both persistent sinus symptoms and facial injury.
A facial and sinus CT can assess:
- The paranasal sinuses — maxillary, ethmoid, frontal and sphenoid
- Thickening of the sinus lining and fluid levels within the sinus cavities
- Blockage of the drainage pathways between the sinuses and nasal cavity
- Nasal septal deviation and structural variations affecting airflow
- Nasal polyps and other soft tissue changes within the sinuses
- Facial bone fractures, including the orbit (eye socket), cheekbone and nasal bones
- Bony changes following facial trauma or previous surgery
At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, facial and sinus CT is performed using low-dose protocols and reported by specialist radiologists, with results sent directly to your referring doctor.
Why Would My Doctor Refer Me for a Sinus CT?
A sinus CT is usually requested when symptoms have persisted despite treatment, when the cause of ongoing facial or nasal symptoms is unclear, or when an ENT surgeon needs a precise anatomical map before proceeding.
Common reasons for referral include:
- Chronic or recurrent sinusitis that has not responded to treatment
- Persistent nasal blockage or congestion
- Facial pain or pressure around the cheeks, eyes or forehead
- Reduced or absent sense of smell
- Recurrent headaches thought to be sinus-related
- Suspected nasal polyps
- Assessment following a facial injury or trauma
- Pre-operative planning before functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS)
The scan gives your GP or ENT specialist a clear structural picture to guide the most appropriate treatment. We welcome patients from St Ives, Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon, Killara, Wahroonga and Lindfield.
