What Does an Extremity X-Ray Detect Fractures, Dislocations & Arthritis?
An X-ray of the hand, wrist, foot, or ankle is the standard first investigation when a bony injury or joint condition in these areas is suspected. These scans are fast, low-dose, and highly informative for most common presentations.
What an extremity X-ray can detect:
– Fractures — including in the small bones of the hand and foot
– Dislocations of fingers, toes, and ankle joints
– Arthritic changes — joint space narrowing and bone spur formation
– Gout — tophaceous deposits visible in established cases
– Bone alignment and structural integrity of joints
– Foreign bodies (such as glass or metal fragments) near the hand or foot
– Bone changes associated with infection or metabolic conditions in some presentations
Walk-in extremity X-rays are available at Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village during all opening hours. No appointment needed — simply bring your GP or treating practitioner’s referral.

When Is an X-Ray Not Enough for Hand or Ankle Injuries?
While X-ray is always the right starting point for most hand and ankle injuries, there are situations where additional imaging provides important information that X-ray cannot provide.
When additional imaging may be recommended:
– Scaphoid wrist fractures: Often invisible on an initial X-ray — MRI or CT may be recommended if clinical suspicion remains high despite a normal X-ray result.
– Ankle ligament injuries: X-ray assesses bones only — ultrasound or MRI is needed to directly evaluate the ankle ligaments (ATFL, peroneal tendons).
– Osteochondral lesions: Cartilage and underlying bone surface damage at the ankle joint is best assessed with MRI.
– Complex hand fractures involving joint surfaces: CT provides better 3D bone detail for surgical planning.
Your GP or treating specialist will advise if follow-on CT, MRI, or ultrasound is appropriate after reviewing your X-ray. All three investigations are available at Epoch Medical Imaging located in St Ives Shopping Village — call (02) 9129 6999 to book.
