Abdominal & Pelvic MRI

Abdominal and pelvic MRI at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives. Detailed, radiation-free organ imaging including liver, pancreas and pelvic studies. Serving the North Shore — Gordon, Turramurra, Pymble & surrounds.

What Does an Abdominal & Pelvic MRI Assess?

MRI provides outstanding soft tissue contrast within the abdomen and pelvis, allowing organs and abnormalities to be characterised in far greater detail than other imaging can achieve — often answering questions that an ultrasound or CT has left open.

An abdominal and pelvic MRI is used to assess:

  • The liver — characterising lesions, and assessing fat and iron content
  • The bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreatic duct (MRCP)
  • The pancreas, including cysts and inflammatory change
  • The kidneys and adrenal glands
  • The uterus and ovaries — fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis and ovarian lesions
  • The prostate, using multiparametric MRI for detailed assessment
  • The rectum and pelvic floor

At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, all abdominal and pelvic MRI studies are reported by specialist radiologists with results sent directly to your referring doctor.

Why MRI Rather Than CT or Ultrasound?

Ultrasound and CT are often the first investigations your doctor orders. MRI is usually the next step when greater detail is needed, or when a finding requires precise characterisation.

Your doctor may recommend MRI when:

  • A lesion has been found on ultrasound or CT and needs to be characterised definitively
  • Detailed assessment of the bile ducts or pancreatic duct is required, without an invasive procedure
  • Pelvic conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids need accurate mapping before treatment
  • Prostate assessment is needed prior to, or instead of, biopsy
  • Repeated imaging is expected and avoiding radiation exposure is a priority
  • Iodine-based CT contrast is unsuitable due to allergy or kidney function

Ultrasound, CT and MRI are all available at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives Shopping Village — so your investigation can progress without delay.

Preparation & What to Expect on the Day

Preparation depends on the region being examined. Our team will give you specific written instructions when you book.

Before your appointment:

  • Fasting of four to six hours is usually required for liver, pancreas and MRCP studies.
  • Pelvic studies may have their own instructions regarding bladder filling or bowel preparation.
  • You will complete an MRI safety questionnaire covering any metal implants or previous surgery.
  • Let our team know of any allergies or kidney conditions when you book.

On the day:

  • You will change into a gown and remove all jewellery.
  • The scan takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes.
  • You will be asked to hold your breath for short periods — following the instructions closely keeps the images sharp.
  • Many studies include a gadolinium contrast injection through a small cannula in the arm.

Your report is sent to your referring doctor, typically within three days. To book at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives Shopping Village, call (02) 9129 6999.
