Vascular MRI (MR Angiography)
MR angiography at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives. Non-invasive, radiation-free blood vessel imaging, often without contrast. Serving the North Shore — Turramurra, Gordon, Pymble & surrounds.
What Is an MR Angiogram and What Can It Detect?
An MR angiogram (MRA) uses magnetic fields to produce detailed images of the arteries and veins, without radiation and without an arterial catheter. It can be focused on any vascular region — the brain, neck, chest, abdomen, pelvis or limbs — depending on what your doctor needs to assess.
An MRA can detect:
- Aneurysms, including those within the brain and the aorta
- Narrowing or blockage of an artery restricting blood supply
- Carotid artery plaque and narrowing in the neck
- Arterial dissection
- Arteriovenous malformations and other vascular abnormalities
- Peripheral arterial disease affecting circulation in the legs
- Narrowing of the renal (kidney) arteries
- Venous conditions, including clot and vessel compression
At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, vascular MRI is reported by specialist radiologists experienced in complex vascular imaging.

Preparation & What to Expect on the Day
An MR angiogram requires minimal preparation and involves no recovery time.
Before your appointment:
- You will complete an MRI safety questionnaire covering any metal implants, stents, surgical clips, pacemakers or previous surgery.
- Fasting is not required for most MRA studies — our team will advise you if this applies to your scan.
- Tell us about any allergies or kidney conditions at the time of booking, particularly if contrast is planned.
On the day:
- You will change into a gown and remove all jewellery.
- The scan takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes depending on the region examined.
- You will hear loud knocking and tapping sounds — earplugs and headphones are provided.
- Breath holds may be required for scans of the chest or abdomen.
- If contrast is required, gadolinium is given through a small cannula in the arm.
