What Does an Abdominal & Pelvic Ultrasound Examine?
Ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to produce real-time images of the organs within the abdomen and pelvis. It involves no radiation, requires no injection, and is often the first investigation your GP will request when assessing abdominal or pelvic symptoms.
Structures examined include:
- Liver, gallbladder and bile ducts
- Pancreas and spleen
- Kidneys, ureters and bladder
- Uterus, ovaries and endometrium in women
- Prostate and bladder emptying in men
- The abdominal aorta and major blood vessels
- The abdominal wall, including hernias
At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, scans are performed by experienced sonographers on high-resolution equipment and reported by specialist radiologists, with results sent to your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours.
Common Reasons for Referral
Abdominal and pelvic ultrasound is one of the most frequently requested investigations in general practice, and there are many reasons your doctor may refer you.
Common reasons include:
- Unexplained abdominal pain, bloating or swelling
- Suspected gallstones or gallbladder inflammation
- Abnormal liver function blood tests
- Suspected kidney stones or urinary symptoms
- Pelvic pain or abnormal menstrual bleeding
- Investigation of fibroids, ovarian cysts or endometrial thickening
- Difficulty emptying the bladder
- A suspected hernia
- Screening or monitoring of an abdominal aortic aneurysm
Whatever the reason for your referral, ultrasound gives your doctor clear, reliable information to guide the next step in your care.
Preparation & What to Expect on the Day
Preparation depends on which region is being scanned. Our team will confirm exactly what you need to do when you book on (02) 9129 6999.
How to prepare:
- Upper abdominal scans (liver, gallbladder, pancreas): fast for six hours beforehand. Small sips of water are permitted.
- Pelvic and bladder scans: drink one litre of water an hour before your appointment and do not empty your bladder — a full bladder is needed for clear images.
- If both are requested, follow both instructions. Our team will guide you.
- Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing so the area can be accessed easily.
On the day:
- You will lie on a comfortable examination couch.
- Warm gel is applied to the skin and a small handheld probe is moved over the area.
- You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or to roll onto your side.
- The scan takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes and is completely painless.
Your report is sent to your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours. Epoch Medical Imaging is located at St Ives Shopping Village, serving patients from St Ives, Turramurra, Pymble, Gordon, Killara and Wahroonga.
