Testicular (Scrotal) Ultrasound

Testicular ultrasound at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives. Fast, painless assessment performed with discretion and care. Serving the North Shore — Turramurra, Gordon, Pymble & surrounds.

What Does a Testicular Ultrasound Assess?

Ultrasound is the definitive investigation for the scrotum. It provides high-resolution images of the testes and surrounding structures, and Doppler assessment of blood flow — all without radiation and without any injection.

A testicular ultrasound is used to assess:

  • A lump or swelling you or your doctor has felt
  • Cysts, including epididymal cysts
  • Fluid collections around the testis (hydrocele)
  • Enlarged veins within the scrotum (varicocele)
  • Infection or inflammation of the testis or epididymis
  • Blood flow to the testis, where torsion is suspected
  • Injury following trauma
  • An undescended or absent testis
  • Investigation of difficulty conceiving

At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, scans are performed by experienced sonographers and reported by specialist radiologists, with results sent to your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours.

When to Seek Urgent Assessment

Most scrotal symptoms are not an emergency, but some need to be assessed straight away.

Seek immediate care if you experience:

  • Sudden, severe testicular pain, particularly with nausea or vomiting — go to your nearest emergency department without delay, as testicular torsion is time-critical
  • Significant pain following an injury
  • Rapid swelling accompanied by fever

For a new lump, ongoing discomfort or gradual swelling, see your GP promptly for a referral. Epoch Medical Imaging can usually accommodate urgent referrals on the same day — please tell our team when you book that your referral is urgent.

Preparation & What to Expect on the Day

There is nothing you need to do to prepare, and the examination is quick and straightforward.

How to prepare:

  • No fasting and no preparation is required.
  • Wear comfortable, easily removable clothing.
  • Let our team know at the time of booking if you would prefer a sonographer of a particular gender, or if you would like a chaperone present.

On the day:

  • You will lie on your back on the examination couch, with a towel positioned to keep you covered and supported.
  • Warm gel is applied and a small probe is moved gently over the area.
  • Doppler is used to check blood flow to each testis.
  • The scan takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. It is painless, though an inflamed area may be tender.
  • You are welcome to bring a support person into the room.

Your report is sent to your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours. To book at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives Shopping Village, call (02) 9129 6999.
