Transvaginal Ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives. Detailed pelvic imaging performed with care, privacy and respect. Serving the North Shore — Turramurra, Gordon, Pymble & surrounds.
Why Is a Transvaginal Ultrasound Performed?
A transvaginal ultrasound places a slim probe close to the pelvic organs, which produces significantly clearer images than scanning through the abdominal wall. For many gynaecological questions it is the only way to obtain the level of detail your doctor needs.
It is commonly used to assess:
- Early pregnancy, including dating and confirming location
- Ovarian cysts and follicle tracking during fertility treatment
- Endometrial thickness in women with abnormal or postmenopausal bleeding
- Fibroids and adenomyosis
- Signs suggestive of endometriosis
- Ongoing pelvic pain
- The position of an intrauterine device (IUD)
- Investigation of difficulty conceiving
At Epoch Medical Imaging in St Ives Shopping Village, transvaginal ultrasound is performed by experienced sonographers and reported by specialist radiologists.
Your Comfort and Privacy
We understand this examination can feel daunting, particularly if it is your first. Our team will explain each step before it happens, and you remain in control throughout.
What we want you to know:
- A female sonographer is available on request — please tell us when you book so we can schedule accordingly.
- You are welcome to bring a support person into the room, and a chaperone can be provided.
- You will undress from the waist down in private and a sheet is provided to cover you.
- The probe is slim, covered with a protective sheath and lubricating gel, and inserted only a short distance. Most women describe the sensation as similar to a tampon or a speculum examination.
- You may ask the sonographer to pause or stop at any point.
- You may decline the transvaginal portion — an external scan will be offered instead, though the images will be less detailed.
The examination usually takes 15 to 30 minutes. In many cases an external abdominal scan is performed first, followed by the transvaginal scan.
Preparation, Timing & Results
Preparation is straightforward, and our team will confirm the details with you when you book.
How to prepare:
- If an external pelvic scan is being performed first, arrive with a full bladder — drink one litre of water an hour before and do not empty your bladder.
- You will be asked to empty your bladder before the transvaginal portion begins.
- No fasting is required.
- The scan can be performed during your period if clinically necessary. Please let our team know, and remove any tampon beforehand.
- For some gynaecological questions the timing within your cycle matters — mention your dates when you book.
Your report is sent to your referring doctor within 24 to 48 hours. To book at Epoch Medical Imaging, St Ives Shopping Village, call (02) 9129 6999.
